Cote de Texas recently wrote a brilliant post about the rampant McMansion invasion in some of her favorite Houston neighborhoods. A handful of houses from my very own neighborhood instantly came to mind while reading her
blog entry. I decided to post a few that are currently on the market where I live. Now, don't get me wrong, beautiful houses can be found everywhere I look, but these "mutant homes" just kill the architectural integrity of a beautiful street.
The following homes are either new construction, recently renovated, or built after 2006. The least expensive one is listed for 1.4 million.

Yikes--those are scary looking!
While its a secret fantasy of mine to have enough extra space to have a gift wrapping room - I don't see how any family needs this kind of space. Why do there need to be more bathrooms than bedrooms? Why are there so many freaking rooms to watch tv in? I just don't get it. More space is wonderful but isn't there a diminishing return to have a castle like residence?

I couldn't agree more. After our t.v. died in May I was so tempted to not get a new one, I honestly didn't miss it. It's amazing what we have learned to live with and what we actually NEED.
Why so many garages, so much square footage to heat and cool, so many toilets to clean... I just don't get it??
Let's hope there is a shift back to the "less is more" mentality.

That first house is just strange!!!! It's like a hybrid of spaceship and McMansion! I dream of a gift wrapping room as well! ;)

I read that post by cote de Texas and thought it was great. We have so many examples of poor design on large new homes in Dallas. Mcmansion city! I liked your examples.
